Balicasag is one of those little preserved islands where the coral remained intact and where the marine life is abundant. I didn't know, but all of my instructor friends Philippines had advised me to go there. Well, I was not disappointed, I can confirm that the diving in Balicasag is superb, among the most best dive sites in the Philippines, without a doubt Bohol's most beautiful spot !! Please note, there is no diving clubs in Balicasag, we will have to start from Panglao sure Bohol.

Context: After working 2 months as an instructor at Malapascua, I wanted to do the best diving of the Visayas (Moalboal, Apo Island, Donsol…) And I spent 2 weeks on Panglaofrom where I went to dive in Balicasag.

Where is Balicasag?

  • Balicasag is a little off Panglao south west of Bohol.
  • Inhabited by a hundred local families, mostly fishermen.
  • Only one resort on the island, the Balicasag island diving resort.

School of barracudas, turtles, superb coral and macro!

From what I could observe during my 3 months in the Philippines, the most beautiful dives of Bohol and even of all the Visayas of the east (with Apo island) are in Balicasag.

  • There is a lot of life, it's teeming with fish everywhere, damsels, angelfish fish, surgeon fish, butterfly fish ....
  • A huge school of jacks walks around the island, often to Black forest, But not all the time…

  • Some sea turtles are present all around the island, mainly to Black drills.

  • The coral is splendid, varied, colorful and healthy.

  • Lots of macro : frogfish, nudibranchs, seahorses ...

Best Balicasag diving spots

  • Black forest
    • Don't miss Black forest!
    • This is probably the'one of the best sites I've done in the Philippines (with Monad shoal for fox sharks sure Malapascua or Manta bowl to Donsol for the whale sharks).
    • An exceptional life along this slope, snapper benches and of fusilier, napoleons, grouper, batfish ...
    • Huge green turtles are also still around. We call it "black forest" because of the abundance of its black coral.
    • It's simple, I spent all my diving to film and take pictures and it's been a long time since that happened!

  • Sanctuary / Richo's wall
    • This site starts with a beautiful coral garden in shallow waters (7 to 11 m) where I could come across clownfish, nudibranchs, damselflies, moorish idols, angel fish….
    • At the end of the coral garden, we find the wall which goes down to about 40 m.
    • We're drifting along the wall, I could see snappers, jacks, surgeons, riflemen, moray eels, barracudas

  • Rudy's wall
    • Rudy's rock is very similar to Rico's wall.
    • You will normally be more likely to come across green turtles.
  • Cathedral
In addition to beauty of his coral and the abundance of fish like all Balicasag sites, the peculiarity of this wall is to possess many faults and crevices to explore!
  • Diver's heaven
Another beautiful site full of fish. We often start at Black Forest and we finish at Diver's heaven.

We can technically dive all year round in Balicasag (Bohol), but lat best diving season at Balicasag (Bohol) is from October to June.

  • Avoid the rainy season in Bohol of July to September. The boats leave but the visibility is less good than the rest of the year.
  • banc de fusiliers balicasag panglao bohol philippinesAvoid the cyclone season at Bohol from October to December: it does not normally rain, but a cyclone alert can arrive at any time and diving trips can be canceled for several days.
  • Avoid the Chinese New Year period, Bohol is overrun with Chinese, the sites are crowded and the hotels full!

  • Visibility at Balicasag Bohol : 20 to 30m (except rainy season).
  • Balicasag Bohol water temperature : 27-29 ° on average.
  • Current Balicasag Bohol : the island is not famous for its strong currents.

If you are going to Panglao, a diving day at Balicasag is obligatory ! For also doing Apo island (which is a priori much better known and reputed), I preferred diving in Balicasag. I took full eyes for 3 dives, schools of fish, superb coral, turtles, large pelagics and macro !
