Some wreck dives of Coron the Philippines are known worldwide and for good reason, these WWII ships are just awesome! Resting in a relatively protected area, they are still in excellent condition. In addition, underwater for 70 years, they are covered with coral and have become real artificial reefs with many pelagics gravitating around. All different, it is difficult to establish a ranking, it will depend on what you like and your level. In any case, whether you are a beginner or experienced, dive the wrecks of Coron is really something unique!

Context: I managed the center French Kiss Divers Coron for 1 year, so I dive daily on these wrecks !!

THE HISTORY OF CORON SHIPWRECKS

In summary :

  • During the 2nd World War, the Americans and the Japanese clashed violently in the Philippines.
  • September 21, 1944 : air attack in Manila bay> several Japanese ships were sunk but some escaped and went to hide in the Coron area.
  • September 23, 1944  : Japanese radio transmissions were intercepted which allowed Americans to locate them.
  • September 24, 1944 : the Americans launched a 15-minute air attack by Task Force 38.

= 12 SHIPS WERE PRESENT
9 were sunk, 1 escaped and the last 2 ... ???
(they have
surely sank trying to run away ...)

During the 2nd world war:

  • Americans and Japanese clashed hard in the Pacific, especially in the Philippines.
  • The Japanese took Manila in 1942, since then the Americans were trying to recapture the capital and the Philippines.

September 21, 1944: ATTACK ON MANILA BAY

plongee epave coron photo historique porte avion

  • Americans attacked the Manila Bay (where part of the Japanese fleet was stationed) and sank about fifteen ships.
  • The survivors fled south and arrived at Coron thinking that this area was out of range of US air bases.
  • But the Americans found them ... (the most likely version is that they would have intercepted some of their radio transmissions).

September 24, 1944: THE AIR RAID

plongee epave coron photo historique raid aerien

  • The Americans launched an air raid by Task Force 38.
  • At 5:50, 96 Grumman F6F Hellcat fighters and 24 Curtiss SB2C Helldiver bombers took off from the aircraft carrier USS Lexington more than 500 km from Coron.

  • This attack was really risky. Starting point being located at more than 500 km, the pilots had very little time on site if they wanted to have enough fuel to return to their safe and sound base.
  • The attack lasted only 15 minutes!

plongee epave coron photo historique avant attaque

The course :

Akitsushima and Okikawa in the 1st

  • The bombers arrived around 9:00 am and found 12 Japanese ships stationed around the island of Busuanga: 9 in Coron Bay and 3 in the north.
  • The Akitsushima hydroplane carrier and Okikawa tanker were the first to be attacked.
  • Despite thatAkitsushima He was heavily armed and opened fire with all his force, he was not well sized and received a bomb in the middle of the ship which caused a huge explosion and caused it to sink rapidly.
  • Just above, Okikawa, whose tanks were filled with oil, was the second target. He received a bomb in the front, which will quickly ignite the whole ship.
  • However, it did not sink that day, it burned for days and it took a second attack on October 9, 1944 to finally put it on the bottom of the water.

plongee epave coron photo historique apres attaque

Olympia, Irako, Kogyo, Morazan in 2nd

  • Then, in the bay of Coron (between Tangat and Lusong), Olympia was the first attacked.
  • Several bombs penetrated the middle of the freighter and touched barrels of gasoline, causing a huge explosion in the engine room. The cargo ship sank with 19 crew members.
  • Highly armed, the impressive cargo refrigerated Irako defended himself fiercely, but suffered the same fate.
  • Little armed, cargo ships Kogyo and Morazan sank quickly.
  • There is no information on East tangat gunboat and Lusong gunboatbut with little defense, they were probably sank quickly during this wave.

Kyokuzan last

  • The last part of the attack took place in the north of the island of Busuanga where 3 ships were stationed: the Kyokuzan, the Kamoi and another.
  • The huge cargo ship Kyokuzan was the 1st to be attacked. Touched quickly, the fire spread across the ship and the Japanese scuttled it to sink.
  • The Kamoi was badly damaged but managed to escape and return to Hong Kong.
  • We have no information about the 3rd boat, he surely tried to escape and sank further from the coast, who knows ...

> Recommended level: Advanced

> Key points:

  • plongee epave coron philippines akitsushima wreckAkitsushima is a 118-meter-long seaplane carrier lying recumbent on its left flank at a depth of 36 m, the highest part (the hull) being around 22 m.
  • He has a great penetration inside his crack with beautiful light games.
  • One of those where there is the least marine life and corals.
  • Do not miss crane, anti-aircraft gun, gas mask, engine room and crane machinery.

> Info and history wreck Akitsushima

  • epave-Akitsushima-wreck-photo-origine-2The only true Japanese warship (in the sense, present on the battlefields), all the others were more or less cargo ships.
  • He was therefore severely armed, 10 anti-aircraft guns and 4 big caliber guns.
  • He had camouflage paint (as can be seen in the photo).
  • It was a hydroplane carrier that was used to deploy a  single seaplane ("Emily").
  • "Emily" was a priori present during the attack but never found.
  • He was the first ship attacked during the air raid.
  • A bomb reached the storage room of the barrels of gasoline, which triggered a huge explosion that almost cut the boat in 2 (see the huge opening towards the middle in the photo).

Like many wrecks of Coron, Akitsushima can be dipped in several ways.

  • epave-Akitsushima-wreck-hydravion-emilie
    Emilie seaplane

We often start by going down the boat to go see theimpressive crane, which is still there on the ground and in very good condition.

  • Right next to the crane, do not miss to see the only survivor of anti-aircraft guns who stands on the ground.
  • Then you will definitely go enter the huge crack which opens the inside of the boat. This place is magical with beautiful light games.
  • Akitsushima - outside gun some color
    The anti-aircraft gun

From there several routes possible depending on your level.

  • For the most experts, we go back to 34 m in the upper decks and we walk inside (a really great course to do), do not miss one of gas masks from the time that is still there.
  • Then for everyone, visit the engine rooms, then the impressive crane machinery at the bottom of the crack and finally we come out through a small door to the highest part of the boat.

> Akitsushima wreck diving review

I like Akitsushima, the experienced passage is really nice to do with lots of light effects + the anti-aircraft gun (the only one around Coron) + the crane, it's really a nice dive, but short because of the non-decoration time, (within 25-30 min, even for good ones!).

EPAVE DIVING EAST TANGAT CORON
(also called Teru Kaze)

Submarine hunter - Length 30 m - Depth: 4 - 20 m.

Small, but with a lot of macro and perfect for a 1st wreck!

epave-coron-East-tangat-gunboat-wreck-origine
A submarine hunter that looks like East Tangat

> Recommended level: Open water is enough.

> Key points:East tangat - Bow view

  • East Tangat is the second smallest wreck of Coron (after Lusong gunboat), it rests right on a slope between 4 and 20 m of bottom.
  • One of the best wrecks for the macro (ghost pipefish, nudibranch ...) and we can see mandarin fish during the day !
  • Certainly themost diving wreck (with Morazan) because everyone goes there (even in open water training and baptism !!), attention in high season ...
  • Do not miss : Mandarin fish.

fiche information plongee epave coron east tangat

> Info and history wreck East tangat

  • East tangat - inside cabineIt was a small patrol boat (gunboat) that was used to search submarines.
  • Too small, nameless and therefore not referenced in military bases, we did not no info on it !
  • No real photo exists either (the one below and the one I found closer to reality!)
  • There is no real apparent damage, so the crew had to abandon the boat on their own during the attack.
  • This wreck is also called " Teru kaze (This was the Japanese name given to this type of boat).

> Diving on the East Tangat wreck (Teru kaze) in Coron

  • East tangat - outside cabineWe often start at the front of the boat (the deepest part at 20 m) and we go around the hull a little.
  • We make a small penetration in the front cabin, we pass on the sides of the boat, above the cabin ...
  • For the more experienced, one can penetrate the rear hold and go up to the main cabin.
  • Above all, do not miss the search for mandarin fish next to the front of the boat to the right, because seeing them in the middle of the day is not given to everyone (normally they do not go out until sunset)!

> East Tangat wreck diving review

East Tangat can suit many people. If you are Open water, it allows you to make a wreck of the 2nd world war with easier conditions than the others, small simple penetrations, of the life around ... If you are more experienced, do not go there in high season (December to June) frankly, there are too many people, 10ths of Chinese or Korean divers and many snorkelers above!

  • One of the two most impressive wrecks of Coron (with Kyokuzan).
  • It offers them better penetrations "thrills" for the most experienced (kind in the dark almost total at 36 m depth)!
  • Do not miss : penetrations in the holds below 30 m (if you have the level), the front of the boat, the support of the turret.

Irako before the attack
  • It was a refrigerated cargo ship carrying food.
  • He could feed up to 25000 people for 2 weeks!
  • He received multiple bombs on the middle of the bridge and sank slowly with a lot of man on board.

> Diving on the Irako wreck in Coron

Like many wrecks of Coron, one can dive Irako in several ways.

For advanced confirmed: main deck + small penetration

  • Irako outside big turnet3
    Anti-aircraft gun support

We descend from one of the two ropes (often at the front), we realize the size of the ship (19 m wide) and we walk over the bridge.

  • Nice little penetration in the front cabin.
  • Then we go on the deck at the front of the boat where we can see the huge support of the anti-aircraft gun
  • If the visibility is good we go to the front and deviate a little to admire the size of the ship! Awesome !!
  • Attention, the bridge of Irako is within 30 m, so a good level is necessary and a very good consumption of air.

For the most experts: penetration in the holds at 30-40 m.

  • Irako inside ice machine
    Ice machine

For those looking for even more sensations, to enter Irako is really something special!

  • But beware, this dive is reserved for real experts: certified to go up to 40 m, to know how to manage the decoration, more than 100 dives and the wreck specialty.
  • Basically we enter the holds of the boat either in the 1st level (30-33 m) or in the 2nd (34-37 m) and we go back the ship through all the parts!
  • Irako inside ice machine3
    Ice machine

We are in the dark for a good part of the diving, thrills guaranteed!

  • Warning, very few people have the level to do that, you need a guide who really knows and very few centers do this diving course.

I love this dive, I brought all the experienced divers that I know, either to enjoy the splendor of the wreck and dive over the bridge, or to get inside the holds and other rooms in the 30 -40 m with a lot of darkness! This is without a doubt one of the 2 most impressive wrecks of Coron.

  • The longest wreck of Coron!
  • It has one of the best penetrations of all wrecks (with Irako).
  • All the top of his main deck is also great for macro fans.
  • Do not miss : the entry by the driveshaft and the penetrations in the tanks and the rooms of the ship.

Okikawa before the attack
  • One of the first 2 ships to be attacked (just after Akitsushima).
  • Hit by multiple bombs, especially at the front of the boat.
  • The only ship that did not sink on the day of the raid, it was on fire for 20 days until a second attack on October 9 finally sank it.

> Diving on the Okikawa wreck in Coron

The wreck is so big that there are 150 different ways to dive on Okikawa! But basically, either with penetration or without.

Without penetration (or small):

  • okikawa - outside alley 2Exploring the entire upper deck will take time already!
  • Hidden groupers, turtles, batfish, snappers, clownfish ... there is something for everyone!
  • In addition, Okikawa is one of the best wrecks for the macro: nudibranchs, (especially the beautiful blue dragon!), Pipefish ...

Expert penetration:

  • Okikawa - inside diver gettin in hole (nice)
Head entry the 1st in Okikawa tank

For those who want more thrills, Okikawa presents one of the best penetration in the sense really "inside the wreck without a lot of light"!

  • We go down to the back of the boat, we go along the huge rudder and we enter the back of the boat by a small hole and we drive along the drive shaft.
  • We arrive in a huge room where we can observe the prisons " of the ship.
  • Then we link the rooms, all more black and impressive than the others.
  • We can spend 20-30 m in the wreck without coming out! Guaranteed sensations with this penetration!
  • We finish on the upper deck and enjoy the abundant marine life and the macro of the ship.

> Okikawa wreck diving review

Okikawa can delight all categories. The open water will be super happy to dive on the largest wreck of Coron and enjoy its exceptional marine life. The advanced will add to that some easy penetrations in the rooms of the main deck. Finally for the experts, spending 20-30 m in a wreck navigating in rooms each larger than the other is not for everyone!

OLYMPIA EPAVE DIVING CORON
(formerly called "Tangat wreck")

Cargo ship - Length 122 m - Depth: 20 - 32 m.

  • Perfect for a 1st wreck diving dive.
  • A large open wreck that allows you to move easily inside its holds.
  • More submissive than the others, we can have a lot of marine life, like trevally giants who hunt, snapper banks ... but also fish clown, crocodile fish, scorpion fish, nudibranch, sweetlips ...
  • Do not miss : the front room and the front of the boat with the support of the turret.

It belonged to Mitsubishi Shoji Kaisha and was requisitioned by the Japanese army during the 2nd World War.

  • For the record, he was confused with Morazan until 2006! It took a story fan divemaster to measure all the dimensions and prove that Morazan could not be the Olympia!

> Diving on the Olympia wreck in Coron

  • We go down to the front (or back).
  • We return inside the holds around 25-30 m and we move slowly (several possible paths).
  • Olympia - outside snapper + tournet 1We go back to the top of the main deck (20-22 m) depending on the air / weather of no deco and we come back / forth passing over all the holds taking advantage of the marine life (bench of snappers, sweetlips, clown fish, damsel, scorpion fish, batfish ...).
  • We made a penetration in the front room (not very high and very black, very nice).
  • We go to the front of the boat to see the support of the turret and marine life (snappers, school of jacks ...).
  • If the visibility is good we move a little forward to try to visualize the size of the boat.

> Olympia wreck diving review

With a straight position on the ground (and not lying down like Morazan or Kogyo), Olympia is suitable for all types of divers. Those who can not go in can walk the bridge from front to back and admire the whole ship and the marine life. It is very good for starting wreck penetrations with large well open holds.

LUSONG GUNBOAT EPAVE DIVING

Gunboat - Length 30 m - Max depth: 0 - 10 m.

Perfect for Open Water, boring for higher levels!

  • epave-coron-lusong-gunboat-wreck-origine
That's what Lusong gunboat looked like

It is a very small wreck (about thirty meters), not deep (10 m max), bent (at low tide, it exceeds water).

  • There is not much to see ...
  • Compared to others, for me it's not a great wreck ... I had to go 2 times in 1 year because I had no choice.

SKELETON WRECK CORON EPAVE DIVING

Skeleton wreck is not a diver wreck!

  • It's the remains, remains of a wreck !!
  • The word "skeleton" (skeleton) defines it well!
  • All snorkeling tours want to take you there to make you dream of "diving" or "seeing" a wreck of WWII, but there is nothing!

WRECK CORON EPAVE BARGE DIVING

BEST PERIOD TO DIVE ON CORON SHREDDING

We can almost dive all year long on the wrecks of Coron but the diving season is January to June.

When to dive on Coron wrecks?

  • Olympia - outside snapper + tournet 1The best period to dive on Coron wrecks is from March to May when visibility is best (10 to 20 m).
  • From January to February, the navigation conditions to the wrecks are good but the visibility is around 10 m.
  • Cyclone season: September to December. Everything is slowed down in Coron and things are very random, all diving trips can be canceled for several days by the coast guard (it happens several times).
  • Avoid the Chinese New Year period (around January-February but it changes every year): there are millions of Chinese who come to Coron, the wrecks are overcrowded, visits to the islands (island hopping) are crowded, there are no more accommodations or c is super expensive…

Conditions on Coron wrecks?

  • Current with Coron wrecks : only Okikawa and Akitsushima are exposed to currents (sometimes strong), the other wrecks are protected.
  • Coron water temperature : 27 to 30 °.
  • Visibility to the wrecks of Coron : 10-20 m (March to May), 5 to 10 m (December to February and June to September), 2 to 5 m (October to November).

CORON DIVING CLUB

French diving club in Coron

  • Miscellaneous Corto
    • corto-divers-coron-philippinesThe one that I will recommend to you first because they have been there for a very long time, they do not overload their boat, they have great equipment, they are super well organized, they are super nice…
    • On the other hand if you want to dive with them, book in advance, they are always full!
    • They are also a resort, so you have diving - accommodation packages.
  • French Kiss Divers
    • FKD logo square.I managed French kiss various Coron for 1 year, difficult to recommend another center !!
    • The benefits with French kiss : they will always put safety first, the always warm welcome, small groups, all training in French, the possibility of making special trips (Kyokuzan, Black Island and Nanshin, Cathedral cave…).

The best Coron dive centers

  • There are many other centers on Coron and there is everything and anything!
  • Apart from Coron divers and French kiss divers, I recommend Reggae dive center (but they are very big and not always welcoming…), Neptune dive center (they are very good, even if the manager is not very welcoming…), Amphibi-ko and Fun & sun.
  • Really avoid anything that is Chinese (Kiss diving, Medusa…), Korean (Sanho, Whale diving, Divers coron…) and even local centers (Coron various, Umali ...): zero security, not the same quality of service, cold reception ...

MY OPINION ON CORON'S WRAP DIVES

Of course you have to like wrecks, but if it is, you will not be disappointed! 8 huge wrecks very well preserved and covered with coral located at the same location, it is not found anywhere! I had wrecks before, but I admit that those of Coron are particularly impressive, 118, 136, 140 and up to 160 m and all different! Of holds penetrations, the engine rooms, the kitchens… Sometimes jup to 30 min in without going out ! Without counting the marine life that has taken up residence on and around ! Only downside, the reduced visibility a large majority of the year (5 to 10 m)…
