Macro: diving in Indonesia is for me the most beautiful in the world! The country is full of superb destinations, there is something for everyone! Manta Ray, Whale Sharks, shark, large pelagic, school of fish in every way, from the macro unique and varied, wrecks and the most beautiful reefs in the world ! The country is huge, there are more than 20 dive destinations in Indonesia spread over all the islands (Sulawesi, Flora, Borneo…). Some are very well known (Raja Ampat, Komodo, Bali, Bunaken…), Others would deserve it! The prices of dives in Indonesia is generally inexpensive, apart from some spots only accessible by liveaboard and the country is suitable for all types of diving styles. Know that the best diving period in Indonesia is clearly between April and November. I don't pretend to know everything, but my diving blog is filled with articles onIndonesia and I’m trying to summarize everything I’ve learned about best dive sites in Indonesia !

Context: I spent almost 3 years in Indonesia, between my divemaster in 2014, 1 year being an instructor in 2017 in the Gili Islands, 1 year as Cruise Director on a liveaboard throughout Indonesia + lots of personal trips. I have more than 1000 dives in Indonesia!

SEASONS: WHEN TO DIVE IN INDONESIA?

When is the best time to dive in Indonesia?

Avoid the rainy season

  • We can dive almost all year in Indonesiabut it's better avoid the months of the rainy season (December to February).
  • During these months, the conditions are more uncertain, navigation at sea becomes sometimes difficult to see impossible and the visibility can go from 30 to 5m because of the waters of rivers flowing into the sea.
  • Then each zone has its own specificities (see map below).

MAIN DIVING ISLANDS REVIEW

carte site de plongee ile de sonde indonesie

  • Komodo is now known worldwide, and it's not stolen, do not hesitate to take a liveaboard there, it's fantastic !
  • Alor is different from Komodo, with a mix of big, very beautiful reefs, superb macro and far fewer people on site!
  • Bali offer good quality dives plus some rare species and its big advantage is its super simple access!
  • Some Gili Islands are the perfect place to learn to dive and will not be disappointing for a certified diver.
  • The dives at Maumere compared to Alor are nothing exceptional.

Komodo Diving Review

plongee raie manta komodo indonesie

  • Komodo remain among my most beautiful dives and are almost at the same level as Raja Ampat , the best destination for you manta rays in Indonesia!
  • Some dives are exceptional and varied with topographies of different sites. There is everything a diver dreams of seeing: manta rays, of the big pelagics, of the schools of fish (barracuda, trevally, snapper ...), sharks (white tip reef and black tip reef and sometimes gray).
  • And what about the coral, simply splendid!
  • The islands of Komodo Park are to be done on a diving cruise and are more affordable than Raja Ampat, perhaps the best quality / price ratio in the world!

Alor Diving Review

plongee alor indonesie - rhinopias

  • Still a little hard to access and unrecognized, Alor is nevertheless a little diving paradise in Indonesia !
  • The corals are superb, colorful, dense and varied.
  • If you are macro fans, Alor can compete with Lembeh and Ambon, with frogfish of all kinds, ghost fish, pygmy seahorse, the famous rhinopias and sites where you can find very rare octopuses (mimic, blue ringed, coconut ...).
  • Finally, we can also find rather rare pelagic hopes on very specific sites: school of hammerhead sharks (at Tanjung muna), Thresher Shark (in Clown valley) and mola mola (at Cathedral).

The full article on ALOR here

  • Strong points : hammerhead shark school (possible at Tanjung muna), fox shark (possible at Clown valley), Mola mola (possible at Cathedral), shark (Tanjung muna), superb macro (rhinopias, frogfish, ghost fish, seahorse ...).

Bali Diving Review

plongee bali indonesie - mola mola

  • Bali has some unique dives and surely present the Indonesia's Best Accessibility / Dive Quality Report !
  • One of the main attractions of Bali is to go to Nusa Lembongan and of dive with manta rays, present all year.
  • In the same place, you also have the rare opportunity to see mola molas (moon fishes) which go back to recreational depths in season (July-September) on certain sites of the island.
  • Finally, west of Bali, at Amedyou can dive on one of the most beautiful shipwrecks in the world, the Liberty. Well known, this splendid wreck of presents a exceptional wildlife, especially macro.
  • The big advantage of Bali is its simple access, on the contrary, of course, you will find many more people at the most popular diving spots...

Gili Islands Diving Review

plongee iles gili indonesie

  • I spent almost 2 years on the Gili Islands, so I think I can tell you about it !! I'll make it simple, it depends on your level.
  • The Gili Islands do not the most beautiful coral in Indonesiabut they are perfect for learning to dive (or even take your divemaster).
  • The dives are simple with good visibility and turtles everywhere!!
  • On the other hand, I would not recommend to a passionate diver to come here. There are destinations far above and not so complicated to access (Bira, Wakatobi, Bunaken, Bali...) to really enjoy the beautiful seabed of Indonesia.

Full article on the Gili Islands

  • Strengths : turtle at all dives, easy dives, perfect for learning.
  • Best time diving Gili Islands : March to November.

Lombok Diving Review

plongee lombok indonesie - banc de requins marteaux site le magnet

  • Lombok is not not very famous for diving.
  • On the other hand, the site of the "Magnet" is well known because it is possible to see in season (June to September) hammerhead sharks!
  • So nothing is guaranteed, the info I have is 50% chance to see them. The site is very particular, it is often called "washing machine", you have to be very experienced to go there.
  • Finally, if we do not see hammerhead sharks, there is not much else to see ...
  • Other Lombok dives are concentrated around Belongas Bay.
  • Strong points : the Magnet site to see hammerhead sharks.
  • Best diving period Lombok : March to November.
  • Season hammer sharks Lombok : July to September.
  • Getting to Lombok: Lombok Airport (Mataram).

PAPUA DIVING REVIEW

carte site de plongee papouasie indonesie

  • It's simple, if you have the chance to go to Papua, go direct to Raja Ampatyou can not be disappointed!
  • No matter what you like (except maybe wrecks), there is everything down there!!
  • If you have time, push up Cenderawasih bay, to see the majestic whale sharks away from the crowds!
  • You have already done Raja Ampat and want to explore lesser known areas, do not hesitate to go to Triton Bay, I'm sure there are nuggets to discover there!

Raja Ampat Diving Review

plongee raja ampat indonesie - les beaux coraux du monde

  • Raja Ampat is located in the heart of " Coral triangle "And is simply the place with the greatest marine biodiversity in the world.
  • Some reef is spectacular, varied and healthy soft and hard corals of all colors and shapes.
  • What about pelagic, it's just a permanent show underwater, schools of fish on all dives (jacks, barracuda, snapper, fusilier, surgeon, etc.), and large pelagic (napoleon, humphead parrot, tuna, bigeye trevally, snapper, grouper ...) that roam everywhere.
  • Sharks are not found in impressive quantities like certain destinations, but again of the variety, with reef sharks (black-tip, white-tip, gray) but also rarer sharks like wobbegong (a type of carpet shark), the leopard shark and the " walking shark (A type of epaulet shark, endemic to Raja Ampat).
  • Macro: macro is not to be outdone, frogfish, ghost pipefish, nudibranch, octopus, cuttlefish ... but the stars are certainly the pygmy seahorses (denise, bargibanti, pontohi) and even the " santa claus", Endemic to Raja ampat.
  • Finally if you like rays, Raja will fill you. There are passage zones for manta rays and the mobula rays, it is therefore not uncommon to come across these giants on certain sites. The icing on the cake, Raja Ampat has a cleaning station for oceanic manta rays, very rare in the world!
  • Raja Ampat offers exceptional dives that will satisfy all types of divers !

  • Strong points : Large pelagic (barracuda, wrasse, humpback parrot, tuna, bigeye trevally, snapper, grouper, turtle), school of fish (jacks, barracuda, snapper, fusilier ...), manta ray, mobula ray school, shark (black tip, white tip, gray, wobbegong, walking shark, leopard), macro (pygmy seahorse, nudibranch, frogfish, ghost fish, nudibranch).

  • Still very little known and not gone, difficult to give a firm opinion, but in view of the information I have, it looks great there, probably at Alor level.
  • Located just below Raja Ampat, the quality of the coral is similar and some endemic species are also found (walking shark, wobbegong ...).
  • Strong points : coral quality, wobbegong, walking shark…

  • Without a doubt one of the best places in the world to dive with whale sharks.
  • They are there all year longSo you are guaranteed to see them!
  • In addition to this already enormous reason, Cenderawasih can be quite hard to access, once there, you will be alone! You will not have not a hundred snorkelers around you!!
  • The bay was also the scene of clashes between Japanese and allies during the 2nd World War and is full of wrecks from this date !
  • Strong points : whale sharks, World War II Shipwrecks ...

Wakatobi Diving Review

plongee sulawesih wakatobi indonesie

  • Wakatobi is a great diving spot, one of the most beautiful of Indonesia!
  • It is halfway between Raja Ampat and Lembeh Strait, a mix between big pelagics, competition macros and splendid corals !
  • A rare occurrence, Wakatobi also has the very rare sea turtles couanne, olivatre and lute.
  • Still a little hard to access, once there, the advantages are we are quiet, far from mass tourism, and the sites are relatively close, no need to take a liveaboard like at Raja AmpatKomodo or the Banda Sea.

  • Bira is not the most known destination of Sulawasi, yet what a treat on the spot!
  • A awesome marine life, tuna that hunt, reef sharks at all dives, eagle rays, fish everywhere, schools of anchovies ...
  • We will do not to Bira for the macro (prefer Lembeh Strait or Wakatobi for that), but if you like the action under water, you will not be disappointed!
  • Still far from classic destinations, go there before it becomes known !

Bunaken Diving Review

plongee bunaken sulawesih indonesie

  • Bunaken is a well-known destination in Indonesia, with splendid drop offs and a coral reef of a very good level.
  • Having not been there, it is difficult for me to judge. Info I have, I will put it at the same level as Bali, the islands Togian or Pulau weh. Places like Alor, Wakatobi and Bira seem above.
  • Easily accessible through Manado Airport in North Sulawesi, a beautiful destination to couple if possible with Lembeh Strait.
  • Strong points : eagle ray, black tip and white tip shark, gray shark, giant trevally, tuna, groupers, wrasse, humphead parrot, barracuda, turtles, seahorses, frogfish, ghost fish, nudibranch ...

  • A destination quite known in Sulawesi, with beautiful drop offs, still quite isolated, I haven't had the opportunity to go there yet.
  • There are not a lot of big stuffbut, apparently a large density of small fish on certain sites and sometimes even dolphins!
  • I think diving is comparable to Bali, Bunaken and Pulau weh, in any case if you want tranquility, you will be alone in the world over there !
  • Strong points : eagle ray, humpback parrot, seahorse, nudibranch, cuttlefish, octopus, moray eel, scorpion fish, lion fish ...

  • I think that it must good, especially with big stuff. I do not have much info on Takabonerat, just that it is a national park, which constitutes the 3rd largest atoll in the world!
  • Very isolated, you can only sleep on Tinabo. If I were to go back to this corner of Sulawesi, I will try to compile Bira, Selayar and Takabonerat!
  • Strong points : shark, eagle ray, marbled ray, humphead parrot, giant trevally, napoleon, nudibranch ...

MOLUQUES DIVING REVIEW

carte site de plongee moluques indonesie

  • Macro or big, big or macro? You choose!
  • For the macro the direction is Ambon, with world class muck dives!
  • You prefer the big and action, take a liveaboard to the Banda Sea!
  • The best is surely to combine the 2 !!
  • There are also dives north of the Moluccas (Morotai and Halmahera), I don't have a lot of information on it, but it looks beautiful, preserved at the coral level and you will be alone in the world !
  • The Moluccas is an area still little explored which abounds suddenly with treasures underwater!

Ambon Diving Review

plongee ambon moluques indonesie - poisson scorpion

  • Ambon owns amazing macro and some endemic species, such as the "Ambon" scorpionfish !
  • Just below Lembeh Strait (which is really the global capital of the macro), Ambon and Alor are at the same level, and in the top 5 worldwide (with Anilao in the Philippines and Mabul in Malaysia).
  • On the other hand, do not come see sharks everywhere or colorful corals like in Raja Ampat or Wakatobi !

The Banda Islands Diving Review

plongee iles banda moluques indonesie

  • The Banda Islands are a very nice place to dive.
  • The most famous island is certainly Soanggi, because in season (September to November) a a resident school of hammerhead sharks can appear!
  • Around the main island of Banda neira, the dives are beautiful and provided with large pelagic (napoleons, giant trevally, humphead parrot…) like in Batu Kapal.
  • Diving with mandarin fish near the port should not to be missed!

Diving the Banda Sea (Ring of fire) review

plongee ring of fire mer de banda indonesie - banc de requins marteaux

  • The sea of banda is characterized by beautiful drop-offs covered with splendid soft corals, sponges and sea fans.
  • It also houses the famous " Ring of Fire. "This is actually a group of small volcanic islands (Damar, Nila, Serua, Manuk, Banda neira ...) located in the middle of nowhere and has given birth to a unique reef!
  • Besides the splendor of the coral, large pelagics can be seen, like the reef sharks, schools of barracudas or jacks, tuna, napoleons, huge grouper, batfish ...
  • From September to the beginning of November it's also an opportunity to see resident school of hammerhead sharks that come up from cold waters. The Ring of Fire is only accessible via liveaboard. The classic route leaves from Maumere, then Alor and the Banda Sea, finishing in Ambon (or the reverse order).
  • Strong points : splendid reef, school of hammerhead sharks (possible in Serua and Soanggi), solitary hammerhead shark possible (Ring of fire), school of fish (jacks, barracuda, snapper, fusilier).

BORNEO DIVING REVIEW

carte site de plongee borneo indonesie

  • Honestly, Borneo is not the first island I will go to Indonesia if I was looking for great diving spots but the Derawan Islands are suddenly on the most beautiful dives of Indonesia in Borneo.
  • On the other hand, if you do, try togo to Sipadan in Malaysia, it's the world's top 10!

Derawan Diving Review

plongee derawan et sangalaki borneo indonesie

  • Derawan is actually a group of islands (Derawan, Sangalaki, Kakaban and Maratua) the most beautiful dives in Borneo.
  • Each island is unique.
  • See manta rays at Sangalaki
  • Snorkel with harmless jellyfish in a unique lake in Kakaban
  • Some nice dives in Maratua (like big fish country and its huge school of resident trevallies).
  • I will put Derawan at the same level as Bunaken, Pulau weh and the Togein, with access still a little complicated.

The full article on the Derawan Islands (Sangalaki, Maratua, Kakaban) here.

  • Strong points : manta ray (Sangalaki), kingfish school (Big fish country in Maratua), harmless jellyfish lake (Kakaban), reef shark, turtle.
  • Best diving period Derawan : April to November.
  • Getting to Derawan: Berau or Balikpapan airport.

  • So let me talk about it here as, being classified in the world's top 10, if you are in Borneo, I advise you to go to Sipadan!
  • It is an exceptional place with reef sharks, turtles and crazy resident schools of fish (jacks, barracudas and humphead parrot).

SUMATRA DIVING REVIEW

carte site de plongee sumatra indonesie

  • Sumatra is not the #1 diving destination in Indonesia, yet I'm sure there are still plenty of unexplored corners.
  • The only one known to date is Pulau weh and I think it's worth it to go, maybe at the level of Bira in terms of big and action. It's just a little complicated to access and far from everything.

Pulau Weh Diving Review

plongee sumatra pulau weh indonesie

  • Pulau Weh is becoming more and more known in Indonesia.
  • Macro: diving to the air of a nice guy there, at same level as Bali, Bunaken and the islands Togian I think.
  • There are a lot of moray eels, jacks that hunt, napoleons, barracudas.
  • We also often see reef sharks (white tip and black tip).
  • I haven't been there yet, but I would love to take a look!
  • Strong points : white and black tip shark, mobula ray, tuna, barracuda, trevally, moray eels, turtle.
  • Best diving period Pulau weh : March to November.
  • Getting to Bali: Banda aceh airport.

INDONESIA's DIVING PRICES

Dive center prices

  • TheIndonesia is in South East Asia and the country is cheap.
  • The dive price in most places is therefore rather reasonable (on average 30 € per dive).
  • But beware, as everywhere, tourist places tend to increase their price every year (Bali, the Gili Islands, Komodo…).

Diving cruise/ Liveaboard prices in Indonesia

  • Some dive cruises in Indonesia started with superb Phinisi boats over 20 years ago, very luxurious and comfortable.
  • Since then operators have adapted and there are cruise ships (liveaboards) much more affordable.
  • I would say that overall cruises to Raja Ampat and the Banda Sea stay quite expensive (but less than the Galapagos or the Coco Islands for example), on average between 300 and 350 € per day (but it can start at 250 €).
  • Those at Komodo are more affordable, with some shorter durations (they are more in the price range of the Maldives or Egypt).

Prices for diving courses in Indonesia

  • about 10 years ago the prices of diving courses in Indonesia was really, really cheap.
  • But just like Thailand, prices have gone up year after year, but it's still cheap.
  • It will take about 300 € for a open water PADI (scuba diving level) and € 50 for one first dive (this is cheaper than the Caribbean for example).

MY OVERALL DIVING REVIEW ABOUT INDONESIA

After 3 years spent there and more than 1000 dives what about Indonesia ?? Just that if I had the time and the money I would do all the possible and unimaginable corners of this country !! I would dive in Raja Ampat and Komodo everyday if I could I would go back to Alor, Bira, Wakatobi and the Banda Sea without a doubt, and especially I would go to the destinations that I have not yet had the opportunity to visit: Lembeh Strait and at the top, but also Bunaken, Pulau weh, the Togian Islands and of course I would go see the whale sharks at Cenderawasih ! No matter your level, there is everything you want in Indonesia and to very good prices compared to other destinations. I love Indonesia and I recommend it to all divers !!
