Macro: diving the Philippines is very varied and you will have the choice between more than twenty destinations ! The best dive site in the Philippines is without a doubt Tubbataha reef (only accessible by boat from liveaboard). The Site (s of diving around Cebu and Visayas are also among the best of the Philippineswith Malapascua Fox Sharks, the sardines of Moalboal or the reefs of Bohol. Also the Mindoro area, with in mind Apo reefthen Puerto Galera and the macro exceptionalAnilao. Fans ofwrecks from the 2e world war will be filled with 2 sites (Coron and Subic bay). PRESENTATION OF THE PHILIPPINES

The Philippines has more than 7000 islands!

  • The Philippines consists of more than 7000 islands.
  • They contain 10% of the world's marine biodiversity and abound in superb dive sites !

carte des iles des philippines

The main islands of the Philippines

alona-beach-panglao-bohol-philippines

  • BOHOL : east of Cebu, quite touristy (monts chocolates).
  • CEBU : one of the most touristy, with several dive sites.
  • LEYTE : little known and little developed.
  • LUZON : the big island to the north, where Manila is.
  • MINDANAO : to the south, the 2nd largest, undeveloped and supposedly dangerous in the south west.
  • MINDORO : uncrowded outside of the dive.
  • NEGROS : uncrowded outside of the dive.
  • PALAWAN : one of the most touristy, but rather quiet at the level of beautiful dives.
  • PANAY : little known, in the center of Visayas.
  • Tubbataha : in the middle of nowhere.

Convenience :

  • Visa : 1 month, but rather simple extension (2 months, then 6 months!)
  • Transport : relatively well organized (plane, boat, bus, van ...) in the main islands, a little less in those underdeveloped.
  • Cost of life : very cheap (you can eat for a few euros) but some areas are starting to go upmarket.
  • Internet Service : everywhere, but beware of small islands!

Where to see whale sharks in the Philippines?

requin-baleine-australie-ningaloo-min

  • The Philippines is one of the countries with the most whale shark crossing areas.
  • The first destination you hear about is Oslob (south east of Cebu), but don't go there ! They feed whale sharks (more info here), it's only snorkeling and it's become a tourist factory!
  • The best places for value for money are Donsol (Luzon) and Padre Burgos (Leyte) where in season (December to May) you have a good chance to see.
  • You also have Tubbataha, but it's another budget!

  • shark - white-tipThe Philippines is not the country where you find the most reef sharks (white tip, black and gray tip).
  • If you want to see it you will have to go to the most remote sites of the coast: Tubbataha and Apo reef.
  • You can occasionally find some other destinations but nothing guaranteed (Malapascua : at the cellar shark, Donsol : on the manta bowl site, Puerto galera on some sites ...).

01 Shark - tresher 2-min.jpg

  • The Philippines is known worldwide for "their" fox sharks.
  • Indeed, the site Monad shoal in Malapascua has the particularity of being a cleaning station for these very rare sharks (normally they evolve between 100 and 500 m of depth).
  • Do not expect to see elsewhere in the Philippines.

  • shark great hammerhead.jpgThe Philippines is not really known for seeing hammerhead sharks.
  • But if you go to Tubbataha, but are likely to see solitary hammerhead sharks not schools.
  • Years ago the island of Cabilao in Bohol also had passages of hammerhead sharks, but unfortunately they have not come for a long time, or very very rarely…

SEASONS: WHEN TO DIVE IN THE PHILIPPINES?

When is the best time to dive in the Philippines?

Avoid the rainy season

top-10-destinations-plongee-tubbataha

  • The rainy season in the Philippines will be between July and September
  • it varies a little each year and depending on the area in the Philippines
  • it can just rain 1 hour a day for a few days or rain a lot for 1 consecutive month!

Evitez la saison des cyclones

  • En plus d’une saison des pluies, les Philippines ont aussi une saison à cyclone entre septembre et décembre!
  • So it's very random, it can be nice and hot and suddenly a cyclone (or more often a tropical storm), and you end up with a lot of wind and waves, rain and dive bans. the guard guards!

Avoid Chinese New Year

  • The Philippines is very popular with Chinese (and Korean ...).
  • The Chinese new year is THEIR great holiday, so they come in droves (and they are a lot), in the best diving destinations of the Philippines: more accommodation, prices that increase, more people sites sites ...
  • Avoid at all costs!
  • The dates of the new Chinese are different every year, it's up to you to check.

  • Of the macro (frogfish, nudibranch, hippocampus ....)

Apo reef diving reviews

Apo reef school of barracudas5

  • UNESCO World Heritage Site (as Tubbataha), Apo reef is the second best destination in the Philippines in terms of diversity.
  • We can see schools of fish (barracudas, trevallies, snappers ...), large pelagic (napoleon, hump parrot, giant trevally ...) and reef sharks (white tip, black tip, gray sharks).
  • Along his vertiginous walls we can also have the chance in season to cross hammerhead sharks (rather January - March) and manta rays (rather February - April).
  • We can dive all year, but the best season for Apo reef is from january to june.
  • This destination is mostly in liveaboard from 2 to 3 days or a week when it is compiled with dives to Coron.

Balicasag dive reviews

plongee-malapascua-tortue-verte

  • Balicasag is the best destination of Bohol, see Visayas.
  • One of these small preserved islands where the corals have remained intact and where marine life is abundant.
  • Less known than Apo Island not very far, I greatly preferred Balicasag: better visibility, beautiful corals, huge turtles, a school of resident jacks, large pelagic fish ...

Diving Cabilao reviews

philippines-diving-destination-cabilao

  • Less well known than Panglao and Balicasag, Cabilao nevertheless offers beautiful dives, mainly drifting along walls covered with beautiful corals.
  • Macro: visibility is always excellent (20-40m) and the water temperature also (26-30 °)
  • The macro is at the rendezvous : frog fish, nudibranch, ghost fish ... and even pygmy seahorses if you have the eye!
  • On the big side, some sites allow you to see trevally, turtle, barracuda, grouper and sometimes reef sharks white tip or black tip.
  • Finally, the biggest attraction of Cabilao remains the possibility to see a bench of hammerhead sharks in the depths (40-50m) north of the island between December and June.

Camiguin 11 mantigue

  • Camiguin is a small island in the north west of the province of Mindanao, in the southern Philippines.
  • It's a destination a bit off the beaten track where I wentreef!!! to relax a week. The island is very nice, good atmosphere, no crowds, localséables ...
  • Plongclassics of the tropics, the new divers will be delighted, not bad to begin.
  • On the other hand most experected will probably be disappointed, nothing special (no shark, no crazy macro, no pelagic schools ...).

Coron diving reviews

plongee-philippines-coron-epave

  • Coron offers a few the best wreck dives in the world.
  • In 1944, a dozen Japanese ships of the second world war were sunk by an American air attack. Today these ships are splendid dive sites, covered with coral and attracting marine life. There are some for all tastes, from beginner to experienced diver who wants to enter wrecks. After Truk lagoon, Coron is probably the world's best known site for wreck dives.
  • In Coron, there is also Barracuda lake, a beautiful place surrounded by cliffs. In this lake we can experience a crazy thermocline as one goes down from 28 ° to 40 °, dive into an environment that looks like the moon and may be lucky enough to see THE barracuda in the Lake!
  • There is also a protected area where there are still some dugongs (type of manatee or sea cow).
  • Finally there are departures for Apo reef.

  • This is one of the many sites in the Philippines that offers the right macro: all types of frogfish (painted, red, orange ...), seahorse, ghost fish, nudibranch of all kinds ...
  • Some sites (eg Big Ligid) with power can offer large pelagic (barracuda, trevally ...), see even reef sharks.

Donsol dive reviews

requin-baleine-thailande-richelieu-rock

  • Dives close to Donsol are not the most beautiful of the Philippines.
  • In contrast, Donsol is a well-known crossing point for whale sharks (from December to May).
  • The Manta bowl site (close to Ticao) offers thean exceptional opportunity to cross these nice giants during a dive.
  • On the same site, you will also be able to see manta rays and reef sharks. That is sure the cheapest place in the world where you can dive with whale sharks !!

  • It turns out that 30 m from the beach and moves between 3 and 10m of background! Diving among thousands of sardines is really a unique experience !
  • The coasts of Moalboal and Pescador island offers nice dives for new divers: coral gardens and tropical fish from the Philippines (damsels, clownfish, poison-angel, butterflyfish, sergeant major ...).

Oslob diving reviews

philippines-diving-destination-oslob

  • In fact, we do not dive in Oslob, I put this paragraph simply to inform you about Oslob.
  • When you do research on the Philippines on "where to dive / snorkel whale sharks", you will inevitably come across Oslob.
  • Do not go to Oslob!
    • Because they are the fishermen who feed the whale sharks.
    • Because it has become a real "zoo" with dozens of snorkelers around a poor whale shark who is under a boat and does not mouth ... (see photo).
  • Please, boycott Oslob !!

Padre 1-min

  • Padre Burgos is not yet a very popular diving destination in the Philippines and yet it is well worth the detour!
  • Again off the beaten track, the coral is magnificent, the macro is super and there are a lot fewer people than in the more famous sites.
  • It is also above all an unknown place and rather accessible to dive with whale sharks in season (December - May) !! If you are a diver and you are close to Cebu, go live!

Panglao diving reviews

Reef Panglao 1-min

  • The dives in Panglao are superb, without a doubt the most beautiful dives in the Visayas.
  • In relation quality-price, it's really what I did best in the Philippines (with Puerto Galera).
  • Dives in Panglao are top, it's teeming with fish (damsel, angelfish, surgeonfish, butterflyfish, triggerfish, gatherin ...), the coral is splendid, varied, colorful and healthy
  • Macro: macro is at the rendezvous : frogfish, nudibranch, hippocampus ....
  • From Panglao you access the jewel of the Visayas: Balicasag (a superb reef, a large quantity of fish, sea turtles and a huge school of jacks who walks around the island).

MY OPINION ABOUT DIVETING IN THE PHILIPPINES

The Philippines is a great country for the quality and variety of its dives ! Of beautiful reefs with all tropical fish everywhere (with in mind Tubbataha reef), of the world class macro on many sites, the possibility of seeing rare specimens (Whale Sharks, hammerhead shark, Thresher Shark, tiger shark) on certain sites and even places for wreck diving ! Depending on your tastes, you will inevitably find your happiness and a budget quite affordable. I enjoyed myself for almost 2 years there !!
