Galapagos Dive Review

meilleure plongee du monde galapagos otarie

  • The Galapagos are small islands lost in the middle of the Pacific where you can see incredible things underwater, especially the big ones: dozens of different sharks (white tip, black tip, gray, silky, longimanus, galapagos…) And of course, one of the best known sites in the world to encounter school of hammerhead sharks !
  • The biggest difference with Cocos and Socorro is that (and few people know this), you don't have to be on a liveaboard to dive in the Galapagos. The islands are inhabited and diving centers are located on the island. You can dive from the main islands and therefore pay much less!
  • Of course if you want to make the 2 best spots (Darwin and Wolf, where the hammerhead stations are) you will have to go on a liveaboard
  • In the Galapagos, you also clearly have a season (July to December) during which the waters are engorged with plankton and attract mass whale sharks and manta rays.
  • Finally, you will surely have the opportunity to see fairly rare species : killer whales, penguins, marine iguanas, seals, sea lions, mola molas.

  • Lost in the middle of the Pacific, French Polynesia is one of the hardest places to access in the world but also one of the most protected! It has 2 exceptional sites: Fakarava and Rangiroa.
  • Fakarava is known worldwide for his pass which brings together more than 700 gray sharks at the same location (watch Laurent Balesta's film on this subject) !! But you can also see several types of sharks in one dive : white-tip, black-tip, gray, tiger, bulldog, silky, hammerhead, oceanic white tips, mako ... More Rays: manta, eagle, mobula and marble!

Raja Ampat Diving Review

meilleure plongee du monde raja ampat banc

  • Raja Ampat is located in the heart of " Coral triangle "And is simply the place with the greatest marine biodiversity in the world. Raja Ampat's strength is therefore his diversity and the amount of his marine life.
  • Some reef is spectacular, varied and healthy soft and hard corals of all colors and shapes.
  • What about pelagic, it's just a permanent show underwater, schools of fish on all dives (jacks, barracuda, snapper, fusilier, surgeon, etc.), and large pelagic (napoleon, humphead parrot, tuna, bigeye trevally, snapper, grouper ...) that roam everywhere.
  • Sharks are not found in impressive quantities like certain destinations, but again of the variety, with reef sharks (black-tip, white-tip, gray) but also rarer sharks like wobbegong (a type of carpet shark), the leopard shark and the " walking shark (A type of epaulet shark, endemic to Raja Ampat).
  • Macro: macro is not to be outdone, frogfish, ghost pipefish, nudibranch, octopus, cuttlefish ... but the stars are certainly the pygmy seahorses (denise, bargibanti, pontohi) and even the " santa claus", Endemic to Raja ampat.
  • Finally if you like rays, Raja will fill you. There are passage zones for manta rays and the mobula rays, it is therefore not uncommon to come across these giants on certain sites. The icing on the cake, Raja Ampat has a cleaning station for oceanic manta rays, very rare in the world!
  • Raja Ampat offers exceptional dives that will satisfy all types of divers !

  • On all dives you will have dozens of different sharks (white tip, black tip, gray, silky, longimanus, galapagos...).
  • Socorro has differences with the Galapagos and the Cocos Islands. The season is much shorter, only from November to June and each species in its period !
  • Of course, there are school of hammerhead sharks but onlyfrom April to June.
  • Socorro is very well known for its impressive number of oceanic manta rays. They are up to 7-8 m long and have absolutely no fear of divers and will approach less than a meter from you!
  • Even more rare, Socorro also brings together a large community of dolphins ! They are curious and approach the divers without fear!
  • Finally, you have the period for whale shark whale sharks and a season while humpback whales are passing the area.
  • There are no habitable islands in Socorro (unlike the Galapagos), so liveaboards are the only option to dive there.

Sardine Run South Africa dates and reviews

meilleure plongee du monde afrique du sud sardine

  • There can't be a top 10 without talking about making a sardine run in South Africa ! This event is probably one of the most impressive that we can observe underwater.
  • Every year between June and July, million sardines go up the coasts of South Africa towards Mozambique. These schools of sardines are gigantic, up to 7 km long and 1.5 km wide !!
  • They attract a large number of predators: thousands of dolphins, different types of sharks, but also whales from Bryde. On the surface, they are also devoured by thousands of gannets (a kind of large seagull).
  • This period also corresponds to the migration of humpback whales which use the same cold currents as sardines. It is therefore also possible to meet these giants during your search for sardines.
  • It's just an exceptional show! Well, of course, it has to be earned: it's super expensive, the days are long and uncertain, nothing is guaranteed…

  • The Maldives are a small paradise made up of small islands bordered by white sand and coconut palms, and underwater its also a paradise!
  • Marine life is complete in the Maldives, with lots of sharks (black-tip, white-tip, gray, but also hammerhead), eagle rays, napoleon and a lot of pelagics like bigeye trevallies or barracudas.
  • But we come here especially to see manta rays. The Maldives has one of largest populations of manta rays in the world (with Indonesia) and can be seen on many sites.
  • The Maldives is very large and each region, see each atoll, can have its specificity or its season in relation to a species. Example, the whale sharks (more likely to be seen in certain areas depending on the period) or hammerhead, tiger and thresher sharks, which can be seen individually on certain specific sites. The ideal to enjoy the Maldives is therefore of course to make a liveaboard to go to different atolls.

MY REVIEW ON THE 10 BEST DIVING DESTINATIONS

All these destinations are exceptional, for different reasons. You dream of seeing " big stuff" , a school of hammerhead sharks, very rare species like the Sea lions, whale sharks or sharks of all kinds, make one of these prestigious destinations: Galapagos, French Polynesia, Coco Islands, Socorro where the Maldives. If you are lover of coral beauty and diversity of species, choose Raja Ampat first then Tubbataha, Sipadan or Palau. Finally, a sardine run in South Africa is just apart, there is no equivalence!
